In the beginning of this chapter Graff and Anderson speak about what they are going to do now that the war is over. They are sitting on the dock where Ender built his raft and are reflecting on their lives and the war. Meanwhile, Valentine comes to Ender and tells him that Peter is in control of the world and he can not go back to Earth because he could be manipulated. She asks him to come with her to the first colony and govern it with her help. After pondering over the idea, Ender accepts her proposal. He says he is only doing this to repay the buggers for killing them all.
After the long journey to the new planet (70 years) Ender finally gets used to ruling the colony. He is almost happy with the way his life is going. One day when Ender is exploring a new place for the new colonists to leave he stumbles upon a place that looks familiar. It is his video game that he used to play at battle school. Ender realizes that the buggers made this for him. As Ender follows the path he used to take in the game he comes upon the mirror that the snakes usually came out of. When he opens it he finds something shocking-the pupa of the bugger queen. Soon, the queen starts communicating with him by showing them videos of the battle from the buggers point of view. She also tells him that the buggers need to live again. Ender wonders how the buggers new all of this about him. He soon realizes it was because of the ansible. This was their way of communicating with him because they couldn't actually speak to him. The queen also tells them that all of the buggers didn't realize the human beings were able to think. When the buggers realized this they never attacked again. After this the final thing the queen tells him is to find a place to place the new bugger queen to survive and hatch. This way, the buggers can be born again. Ender feels as if he owes this to them and decides to help the. His way of helping is writing a book about the buggers real intentions. He signs it -speaker for the dead. The book becomes so popular that it is a new religion for the people on earth and where Ender lives. Finally, Ender reconnects with Peter who is now 70 years old. Peter tells him his life story and Ender writes a book about him also and signs it the same way as his previous book. The only person who knows who the speaker of the dead is is Valentine. After years of convincing Ender persuades her to help him look for a new place to make a home for the buggers. Ender feels like he is finally doing something good after all his bad actions.

In Chapter 14 of Ender's Game, Ender is welcomed to the I.F on planet Eros. Admiral Chamrajnagar is happy Ender is here, but is mad about how long Ender was staying on Earth. He blames this on Graff. Graff and the Admiral do not like each other, but respect the other's opinions because they both are trying to help Ender reach his full potential. Ender knows that his work is going to be hard here, but is willing to take it on to save the world. Soon, Ender starts taking classes and learning how to use a simulator. Graff explains the simulator will help him learn how to control his fleet and others when he is really in battle. After working with the simulator for some time, Ender starts realizing that it is too easy for him. It is just a computer so it won't ever get harder. He tells his concerns to Graff one day at lunch and Graff just says "Oh." Ender doesn't know what Graff is thinking, but he decides that Graff never shows too much of his opinion to Ender. Although the next day something strange happened..... When Ender wakes up he realizes there is something weird going on.
Ender wakes up to see that he has overslept and no one has come to wake him. He goes to open his door and it is locked. It is only then, when Ender sees an old man sitting in his room. Ender thinks this is just a plan to see what he would do to get out of the room. Instead, Ender takes a shower and practices exercises. After a few hours though, he cracks. He tries to speak to the old man, but the man will not answer. Ender turns his back away for only a minute and the man attacks him. Ender is so confused and tries to fight back, but it is useless. The man has too much of an advantage over him because he caught him off guard. After their fight the man introduces himself as Mazer Rackham! After Ender gets over his shock, Mazer tells him that he will be his teacher and his enemy. He explains that the only way Ender can learn is from the enemy. Mazer tells him he is going to now be versing him in the simulator, instead of the computer, and it will get much harder. Ender tells Mazer he is ready for the challenge. Although after a few months of fighting battles everyday, Ender is tired and can't take it any longer. Luckily, he is about to fight his final battle. One morning Ender wakes up and Mazer tells him this is his final battle and he will be examined in front of many people. When the battle begins Ender is outnumbered 1,000 to 1. Ender thinks beating the enemy is impossible so he decides to do something that might upset Mazer and the people testing him. He decides to us the Dr Device to destroy all the buggers at once. He thinks this is breaking the rules, but after he blows the buggers up, he turns around and everyone is cheering. They tell Ender that ever since he has met Mazer Rackham, every game he played was real! He beat the buggers! Ender is confused and upset, he didn't want to kill all of them at all. He locks himself in his room and sleeps for many days. When he finally wakes up he realizes there is a war going on. Ender is very confused until Alai and all of his friends come in. They explain the war to him, and as they are doing so it is announced this war on Earth is over! Ender and his friends then wonder what will happen to them now. They all laugh as they think that they might have to go to school! Throughout this entire book Ender has been wondering if he is a good person or a bad person. He goes in and out of states of depression wondering about this issue. In Chapter 12 Bonzo tries to kill Ender, but Ender ends up killing Bonzo. After this fight Ender goes back and his room and cries, once again wondering what is wrong with him. Personally, I think Ender is a good person. He did kill 2 boys, but both times he was doing it out of self-defense. He would not have done it otherwise. Although he goes a little bit over the top with fights, he does it for a very strategic reason. If he hurts that person enough, no one will want to mess with him again. The fact that Ender is even worried he is a bad person, hints he is a good person. People who are truly evil have no regrets about their wrongdoings. Ender isn't really a bad person, he is just an intense fighter with a quick and witty mind. I have never seen Ender be aggressive first throughout this entire novel, which is another hint at why he is a good person deep down.
In this chapter Ender confides in Bean and tells him he won’t keep winning battles if he doesn’t come up with new strategies. He also tells him he can not keep coming up with new ideas on his own. This is why he needs Bean. Bean will almost be like his assistant. Ender will come to Bean for new ideas and formations that his army could try. He wants Bean to come up with ideas that no one has ever tried before “because they are absolutely stupid.” We can learn many things from this crazy and innovative thinking such as how our nation’s leaders and genius’ think today. They always have to be one step ahead of the rest of the world, so they will be prepared for any situations and problems. One idea Bean might have come up with is having special formations for blocking their gate. For example, having one toon covering their gate. If there are people shooting at the enemy’s and their gate and other members of the team blocking their own gate, then it will be an easier victory. This is just one innovative idea that Bean might have come up with. If Ender picked him to be his helper, then it must have been for a very good reason! Ender probably has big plans for Bean.
In this Chapter Ender is assigned his own army. He knows he has to teach them many things, but Ender thinks the most important one is teaching them about how to change their perspective in the zero-gravity room. A way to teach them this lesson is by telling them the enemy's gate is always down. This is a way for the boys in his army to learn how to re-orient themselves for battle. Although this applies in the zero gravity room, it also applies to real life situations. If a person can take a step back to change their perspective, then they can truly see the situation in the right way. For example; When I was in a fight with my friend, I looked at it from their point of view. It allowed me to understand why my friend acted the way they did. Ir also made it easier for me to forgive them. Changing your perspective can fix many arguments, but that is not the only thing it can do. If our world leaders could use this trait then they could change our world in a million ways for the better. I think the reason why most people don't use this trait often is because it is hard to understand and accept. Some people are stubborn in their ways and think that they are the only ones who are right. They don't want to listen to what other people have to say or anyone else's opinion. This is what stops so many people from seeing the broader picture and solving their own problems. I believe that if everyone were to change their perspectives, they would see the world in a different way.
During this chapter, Ender has stalled in his progress. Even though he is the best solider Battle School has ever seen, Ender feels depressed and stops trying to improve. Why do you think Ender feels this way? Do you think this realistic? Why might someone feel depressed even when things in his or her life seems to be going great?
Ender is nine years old in this chapter, yet he is treated like an adult. Ender has been gone from his home, without any contact from his family, for three years. He has changed greatly in this time and now is in the top rankings. From the outside it seems like Ender's life is going great and that any boy in the military school would want to be him, but in reality, he is breaking down. Ender is only a child and the responsibility that is put on him is huge. He can not be treated like a kid and have very many friends. This isolation from his loved ones, is really what is causing him to go into the state of depression. From the outside looking in, it looks like Ender loves being on top, but from the inside looking out, Ender just wants to be a normal boy with friends and family by his side. This is very realistic because any child that has been without family or even true friends for a long time is bound to start getting lonely. One major cause of depression is loneliness or the fear of being alone. Someone might be depressed even when it seems like things in their life seem to be going great because you can't understand what their life is truly like. It might look like a person has every materialistic item they might want, but on the inside the person might just want someone to be there for them. A person's life might seem great, but you will never know because they might never let you see how they feel on the inside. Someone could have every item in the world and still feel like they have nothing. People need family and friends by their side to help the through the difficult times. Without them, you could see how a person like Ender might become depressed. I thought this Chapter was very intriguing. It was interesting to see what was happening to Peter and Valentine on Earth. Another part of this chapter I enjoyed was learning what was really going on with world from Peter's research. For the whole first part of the book we were left in the dark about the intentions of military school. We knew they were training children to fight the buggers, but when didn't know when they would attack or who would be involved in fighting them. I enjoyed reading this Chapter because it finally explained for about what was going on in the book in more detail. An example of a quote that have helped me come to my conclusion about this chapter is one from Peter describing how they will make anonymous names on the internet and help save the world; "Val, we can say the words that everyone else will be saying two weeks later. We can do that. We don't have to wait until we're grown up and safely put away in some career."
In this Chapter Valentine and Peter are the featured characters. Although Ender is also in some points of this chapter, he is not the main focus..... In the beginning of this chapter Valentine is celebrating Ender's birthday alone when Peter comes up behind her and tells her some shocking news. He says he has been watching the Russian troops and it looks like they are preparing for battle. He says this means that there is likely to be a big war coming up. Peter tells Valentine they can become leaders in this world and make influential decisions about the war and he has a plan on how to do it. Peter already knows that they are kids and no one will take them seriously if they try to state their ideas in pubic. This is when they decide state their opinions online with anonymous usernames. Peter chooses the name Locke. I think that Locke stands for John Locke. He was a philosopher that was a very influential speaker in the Enlightenment. He probably choose this name because he wanted to become a widely known and admired speaker on the internet. The name Valentine choose, Demosthenes was a person who was a speech writer and lawyer. He was a very powerful and influential speaker about politics and government. Valentine might have named herself this because he is who she aspires to be like in the world. The irony of this is that these two people were both very powerful and Valentine and Peter are striving to be very powerful also.
Another important point in this chapter was when Colonel Graff came to visit Valentine is school. He explained to her that Ender was thriving in military school, but he seemed depressed lately. He told her about the game that Ender was playing and how he saw Peter in the mirror (he says this made Ender upset.) Graff wonders if Ender is anything like Peter, but Valentine stands up for Ender saying that Ender is the opposite of Peter. She states Ender is a sweet boy who would never do anything to harm anyone. Colonel Graff seems to think that if Valentine writes him a letter telling Ender what she just spoke to him, he will be reassured he is a good person. So, Valentine writes him the letter. At first when Ender sees it, he can't believe his eyes and is overjoyed.... That is until he thinks that the army is just using Valentine to get him out of his slump. Ender furiously logs back onto his game and tries not to think about what just happened. This time in the game he doesn't try to kill the evil snake, but instead accidentally kisses it. This snake turns into Valentine and she leads him past the end of the world. He now knows that he can trust Valentine no matter what. I think this part was important because to Ender the serpent represented Valentine until she showed and accepted love towards it. That was when he was able to embrace Valentine's love in the game. Ender knows from this part of the game that he needs to act this way towards Valentine in real life. In the end of this Chapter Ender sees Dink in the null-gravity room. Dink approaches him and tells him some surprising things about battle school. Dink states his opinion on why they are really in battle school and about how untrustworthy the adults are. His opinion is shocking, where as Ender has never thought of battle school in this way. Dink's opinion is that all of the adults are lying to them, because he thinks there actually no buggers left in the universe. He thinks it is all an image to make the army look good. Dink truly believes they are training the students for nothing at all. He believes that if there were still buggers in the universe the would have already attacked. Ender decides not to believe Dink, but he can't unhear what was said. This is why that seed of doubt in his mind will always be there.
"The bugger menace. Save the world. Listen, Ender, if the buggers were coming back to get us, they'd be here. They aren't invading again. We beat them and they're gone." The enemy's gate is down"
This quote is describing how Ender has learned all that he could from Bonzo. He doesn't want to be on Salamander Team anymore. He states that he has learned techniques of battle from watching his team fight. This quote describes one of the things Ender has learned from his team. The things he stated that he learned were "the enemy's gate is down", he should use his legs as a shield in battle, and that sometimes soldiers can make decisions that are smarter than their orders. I think this quote also means that because he is underestimated and that he can see things that no one else on his team can see. He can think of strategies that would be more effective than the current ones. This quote is summing up how Ender notices many things and takes everything around him in. He now realizes it is time for him to move on to a different team because he has learned all that he could from this one. He now wants to be on a team where he can put his ideas into action. |
